How do Roman numerals work?

Roman numerals are written from largest to smallest, left to right, and values are added. When a smaller value appears before a larger one, it is subtracted. For example, IV = 5 − 1 = 4, and IX = 10 − 1 = 9.

What is the largest Roman numeral?

Standard Roman numerals go up to 3,999 (MMMCMXCIX). Larger numbers historically required a bar over a numeral (vinculum) to multiply by 1,000, but these are rarely used today.

Common Roman numerals

  • Year 2024 = MMXXIV
  • Super Bowl LVIII = 58
  • Chapter XII = 12
