Understanding base-60 time arithmetic
Unlike decimal (base-10) arithmetic, time uses base-60 for seconds and minutes, and base-24 for hours. This means there are 60 seconds in a minute and 60 minutes in an hour โ not 100. Clock arithmetic example: if a task starts at 9:15 and takes 50 minutes, when does it end? Add 9:15 + 0:50: minutes 15 + 50 = 65 โฅ 60, so 65 โ 60 = 5 minutes, carry 1 hour. Hours: 9 + 0 + 1 = 10. End time: 10:05.
Converting between H:M:S and decimal hours
Decimal hours express time as a single number where the fractional part represents minutes as a fraction of 60. This format is required by many payroll systems, invoicing tools, and spreadsheets, which cannot natively sum H:M:S values.

Why can I not just use a regular calculator for time?
