The alphabets are designed against noise, not for elegance
Morse assigns the shortest codes to the commonest letters — E is a single dot, T a single dash, while Q and Z get four symbols each. That is frequency analysis applied to English in the 1830s, and the same principle underlies modern compression.
The NATO alphabet was chosen the opposite way: not for brevity but for distinctness under distortion. Words were tested across accents and bad radio links, and several intuitive choices were rejected for sounding alike. It is why the awkward-looking spellings are fixed — "Alfa" without the ph and "Juliett" with two ts, so that speakers of other languages do not misread them.
Braille is a different constraint again: six dots, read by fingertip, so the cell size is set by the resolution of touch rather than sight. Grade 2 Braille adds contractions, which is why a printed Braille line is shorter than its letter-by-letter transcription — a page of Braille is bulky enough that the compression is worth the extra learning.
