What is an Open Graph preview tool?
Open Graph (OG) tags are HTML meta tags that control how your web page appears when shared on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and messaging apps. The og:title, og:description, og:image, and og:url tags determine the title, snippet, thumbnail, and link shown in the share preview card. This tool lets you preview how your page will look before sharing it.
Without proper OG tags, social platforms attempt to guess the title and image from the page content, often producing ugly or misleading previews. A well-crafted OG preview dramatically increases click-through rates โ posts with optimized images and descriptions get 2-3 times more engagement than those without.
Essential Open Graph tags
- og:title โ the title shown in the preview card. Keep it under 60 characters.
- og:description โ a brief summary of the page content. Keep it under 155 characters.
- og:image โ the preview thumbnail. Recommended size: 1200x630 pixels for best display across platforms.
- og:url โ the canonical URL of the page.
- og:type โ the content type (website, article, product, etc.).
How to use this tool
Enter a URL and the tool fetches the page, extracts all Open Graph and Twitter Card meta tags, and renders previews showing how the page will appear on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Missing or incorrectly sized images are flagged. Use this to test your OG tags before publishing content.
Twitter Cards vs. Open Graph
Twitter uses its own meta tags (twitter:card, twitter:title, twitter:description, twitter:image) but falls back to OG tags when Twitter-specific tags are missing. For maximum compatibility, include both OG tags and Twitter Card tags. The twitter:card tag (set to summary_large_image for a large preview) is the most important Twitter-specific addition.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my share preview not updating after I changed the OG tags?
Social platforms cache OG data aggressively. Facebook caches for about 30 days. To force a refresh, use Facebook's Sharing Debugger (developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/), Twitter's Card Validator, or LinkedIn's Post Inspector. These tools clear the cache and fetch fresh OG tags from your page.
What image size should I use for OG?
The recommended size is 1200x630 pixels (1.91:1 aspect ratio) for the best display across all platforms. Minimum 600x315 pixels. Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn all display this ratio well. Use JPEG or PNG format, keep file size under 5MB (ideally under 300KB for fast loading). Avoid text-heavy images โ some platforms crop differently.
