What is GPA?

Grade Point Average (GPA) is a standardized way to measure academic achievement in the United States and many other countries. It converts letter grades into numerical values on a 4.0 scale, weights them by credit hours, and produces a single number that summarizes overall academic performance. GPA is used for college admissions, scholarships, graduate school applications, and employer screening.

The standard 4.0 scale assigns: A = 4.0 (excellent), B = 3.0 (good), C = 2.0 (average), D = 1.0 (below average), and F = 0.0 (fail). Some schools use plus/minus modifiers (A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, etc.) for finer granularity. Weighted GPA scales exist for honors and AP courses, but the unweighted 4.0 scale is the most common reference.

How GPA is calculated

For each course, multiply the grade points by the number of credit hours to get quality points. Sum all quality points across courses, then divide by total credit hours. For example: an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course plus a B (3.0) in a 4-credit course equals (12 + 12) / 7 = 3.43 GPA.

How to use this tool

Add each course with its letter grade and credit hours. The calculator computes your GPA in real time. You can add as many courses as needed to calculate a semester GPA or cumulative GPA. Use the reset button to start fresh for a new semester.

GPA scale reference

  • 4.0 (A+ or A): Excellent โ€” highest standard of work.
  • 3.0 (B): Good โ€” above average performance.
  • 2.0 (C): Average โ€” satisfactory but not distinguished.
  • 1.0 (D): Below average โ€” minimum passing in most schools.
  • 0.0 (F): Fail โ€” no credit earned for the course.

Tips for improving your GPA

Credit hours matter as much as grades. A high grade in a 4-credit course impacts your GPA more than the same grade in a 1-credit course. Focus your study effort on high-credit courses. Retaking a course where you received a low grade can significantly boost your GPA, especially if your school replaces the old grade rather than averaging both.

Frequently asked questions

Is GPA used outside the United States?

Many countries use different grading systems. The UK uses degree classifications (First, 2:1, 2:2, Third). Germany uses a 1โ€“5 scale where 1 is the best. India uses percentage or CGPA on a 10-point scale. When applying internationally, you may need to convert your GPA to the local system or provide a conversion table.

What GPA do I need for graduate school?

Most competitive graduate programs expect a minimum GPA of 3.0, with top programs often looking for 3.5 or higher. However, GPA is just one factor โ€” research experience, test scores, recommendation letters, and personal statements all play important roles in admissions decisions.
