What is my IP address?

An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique numerical label assigned to every device connected to the internet. It serves two purposes: identifying your device on the network and providing your location for routing data packets. This tool instantly shows your public IP address โ€” the address that websites and online services see when you connect to them.

There are two versions of IP addresses in use today. IPv4 addresses look like 192.168.1.1 (four numbers separated by dots, each 0โ€“255). IPv6 addresses are longer hexadecimal strings like 2001:0db8:85a3::8a2e:0370:7334, designed to support the vastly larger number of devices on the modern internet. Most connections use IPv4, but IPv6 adoption is growing.

Public vs. private IP addresses

Your public IP is assigned by your internet service provider (ISP) and is visible to the outside world. Your private IP (like 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x) is used within your local network and is not visible externally. A router uses Network Address Translation (NAT) to map multiple private IPs to a single public IP, allowing all your home devices to share one internet connection.

How to use this tool

Your public IP address is displayed automatically when you load this page. The tool may also show approximate geolocation data (city, region, country) derived from your IP, your ISP name, and whether you appear to be using a VPN or proxy. All detection runs client-side or through a simple API call โ€” no personal data is stored.

IP address and privacy

Your IP address can reveal your approximate location (usually accurate to the city level) and your ISP. It does not directly reveal your name, exact address, or browsing history. However, your ISP can link your IP to your account. VPNs and proxy services mask your real IP by routing traffic through their servers, making it appear as if you are connecting from a different location.

Frequently asked questions

Does my IP address change?

Most residential internet connections use dynamic IP addresses that change periodically (every few hours to every few weeks). Business connections often use static (fixed) IPs. Mobile devices get new IPs frequently as they switch between networks. If you need a consistent IP, ask your ISP for a static IP or use a VPN service with a dedicated IP option.

Can someone hack me with just my IP address?

Knowing your IP alone is not enough to hack your devices if your network is properly secured. However, it can be used as a starting point for port scanning, DDoS attacks, or targeted exploits. Keep your router firmware updated, use a firewall, and avoid exposing services directly to the internet. A VPN adds an extra layer of protection by hiding your real IP.
