The idea is straightforward: a calculator gives you an answer, and repetition gives you recall. If you are learning colour bands or subnet boundaries, drilling them beats reaching for a decoder every time.

Why drilling beats looking it up
For anything you use constantly, recall is faster than lookup by a wide margin — not just in seconds saved, but because holding a value in your head leaves your attention on the problem instead of on a search. An engineer who reads resistor bands directly is doing something different from one who decodes them one at a time.
Spaced repetition is what makes that stick. Short sessions spread over days consolidate far better than one long session, which is why these are built as two-minute drills rather than something you sit down to. Getting an answer wrong and immediately seeing the right one is also more effective than passive review — the retrieval attempt is what does the work, even when it fails.
